Shoreline Path of History
Last year the Society, working with the strong cooperation of the City of Benicia, completed the Downtown Walking Tour. Twenty-five signs were placed along First Street commemorating historic points of interest.
This year we are working on the Shoreline Path of History, a tour for walkers, bikers or drivers, coursing about 2.5 miles from the California State Park in the west to the Yuba Industries site in the east. At Southampton Bay, the path would tie into the State Park's trailhead and the San Francisco Bay Trail. The Bay Trail is already well marked as it winds its way through the historic part of our town near the shoreline. Just this past year our access to the shoreline has been increased with the new pedestrian pathway along the water between E and F Streets and the new user-friendly peninsula.
The historic points of interest at which we might place commemorating signs for the Shoreline Path of History include the following:
Yuba Industries
Benicia-Martinez Ferry
Cannery Sites
Transcontinental Railroad Ferry
McKay Tannery
Commodore Jones Point
John's Place
Spenger's Fish Grotto
Crooks House
Semple House
Corbett/Choynski Fight
This is a preliminary list so if you have any suggestions please notify the Society at 707-745-1822 or you can also call Jim Robertson, project coordinator, at 707-747-7779. If you prefer, you can send us an email by clicking here.
